It is important to underline here that I am not positing these signposts as the essential components of the meaning-making process, but rather as useful markers for the journey that most audience members take in their urge to participate in the construction of meaning. These terms are useful in this context because they arise in disciplinary theories and are also well used (indeed, perhaps overused) in the arts industry at large. By starting with an examination of their etymology, social usage, and historical position within theories of meaning making, I hope to produce a useful calculus for the Arts Talk model: taste plus talk equals pleasure.
