What is undone is the homological relation between form and function. In other words, what it works to undo is an envisaged one-to-one relationship between a given function and the form that it takes. The homology of the pregiven is destabilized by its operation. However, this is no simple undertaking; indeed, it is one that would define the limit condition of architectural practice. The relationship between form and function once rescued from abstraction can be understood as the repetition of certain 38 COMPLEX SPACING fundamental structures within architectural practice and thus in terms of architecture's expectations and the expectations held for architecture.

As has already emerged both from the above and from the description of the United Nations project, the interstitial as constitutive of internality and of displacing structures of recognition allows an object to take on different temporal possibilities. Explicating those possibilities demands a link between what has been identified as the yet-to-be and the '1'informe'. As has been intimated, central to the operation of '1'informe' is its utility. It works to undo. What is undone is the homological relation between form and function.

In this sense deferral involves the copresence of the realization of function which, in not being realized at one and the same time, inscribes futurity into the work of the building. Strategies resisting ambivalence but which enact in their place complex forms of deferral provide the setting for this treatment of Eisenman's work. A fundamental part of this project involves developing some of these differing possibilities; what unites them is repetition. And yet, because repetition does not admit of an essence, what has to be traced are the different, and in the end incompatible, modalities of repetition and the way in which they are already interarticulated with ambivalence and deferral; the former in contrast to the latter.
