At the end of the last decade, in the centre of Rio de Janeiro, there was an assault on a bus, with hostages taken, which lasted five hours and was filmed in its entirety by television. A young woman confessed that, when she passed by the area and saw what was happening in front of her eyes, she dashed straight home, and turned on the television to be sure that what she had witnessed in the flesh was true. The means applied to the realisation of the spectacle change with the culture of each people, but its function is the same.

Invoking Liberty and Democracy, one country invades other countries, tortures and kills its citizens, calls those who resist ‘insurgents’, stating that it is doing this to re-establish order. What kind of order? Order imposed by force. This undue appropriation of signifieds and signifiers, this purposeful emptying of all the contents of the Word – which, being able to mean anything, ends up meaning nothing – has as its objective the destruction of the capacity of the citizen to make and use metaphor, the destruction of the capacity for any kind of reasoning through words or images.

There are four main approaches: 1 THE WORD Our objective is not to transform every citizen into a writer of airport bestsellers, but to enable all to be master or mistress of a major human invention: the word, the symbolic language. Words, in order to be symbols – a symbol being a thing which stands in the place of another – need to be charged with the hopes, desires, needs and life experiences of each citizen. The word is one thing, and the meaning that we give it is another, the two not always coinciding.
