The prefrontal cortex is involved in the system necessary for decision making and choosing among options for action. In particular, its critical function in this process is to activate feelings or emotional states, which help focus decision making, from "thoughts" about rewarding or punishing events that are not currently present in one’s immediate environment (29,30).
